Hardanger Sampler

This is a bit of a blast from the past. One year, many, many moons ago, I’d made a Hardanger tablecloth as a present for my mum. And as the fabric used ain’t cheap, I thought I’d make a sampler with the offcut. Here it is:

Hardanger Sampler

Hardanger embroidery comes from the Hardanger region of Norway. It is generally stitched in the same/similar colours – traditionally white thread on white background. Holes are cut into the fabric and intricate stitches create a lace effect. For more on Hardanger, have a look here.

I wanted to try out a variety of stitches and because I was still a beginner at that stage and ‘experimenting’ with tension, some of the blocks look different than the ones on the opposite side of the sampler. Oh well, it’s ‘hand made’, isn’t it?
